El pasado 11 de mayo de 2023, Giuseppe Barilaro obtuvo el Grado de Doctor en Medicina por la Universidad de Barcelona y la Università La Sapienza de Roma, con la máxima calificación "Excelente-Cum Laude", tras defender su Tesis Doctoral titulada "The role of antiphospholipid antibody pattern in the recurrence of thrombosis in the antiphospholipid syndrome". Esta Tesis fue dirigida por los Drs. Gerard Espinosa y Ricard Cervera, del Servicio de Enfermedades Autoinmunes del Hospital Clínic de Barcelona y el Dr. Carlo della Rocca, de la Università La Sapienza de Roma.
El Dr. Barilaro se especializó en Inmunología Clínica y Alergología en la Università La Sapienza de Roma y posteriormente efectuó el Máster de Enfermedades Autoinmunes de la Universidad de Barcelona (2014-2015). Desde el año 2018 ha desempeñado actividades clínicas y de investigación en el Servicio de Enfermedades Autoinmunes del Hospital Clínic de Barcelona.
